Summary
The subject is dealing with functional and constructional solution, building-
up, servicing and working of the telic water-service reservoirs ( small water
reservoir for fish cultural, industry, recreational, protecting etc. purpose ).
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
The student who completes the course should be able:
- to describe, discuss and deal with issues relating to small reservoirs used in water management,
- prepare his/her own concept of a small water reservoir,
- to defend his/her own proposal of a small water reservoir.
Course Contents
1. Introduction - classification, purpose and meaning of the reservoirs. Specific features. Relations in the context of a local region. Links to superior water management systems. History, current situation and forecast for future construction. Economic aspects of tank operation. Environment issues. Property law and legislative issues.
2. Designing and constructions - selecting a location and position for the reservoir. Influence of the environment. Water need (loss, safety, minimum flow rate, supply and retention flow rate), associated investments. Survey - hydrobiology, hydrogeology and pedology. Bearing. Measuring and observations.
3. Organisation and progress of constructions. Site supervisor. Technology process of construction (process in general, construction of filled and concrete dams and facilities). Protection of the site against floods.
4. Designing of damps – classification by functions, layout, construction materials, transversal profile and construction of the dam. Static solution, sealing components (leakage curve), proposal of a filter, anchoring.
5. Methods used for reinforcement of upstream and downstream slopes. Improvement of reservoir bottoms (permeability, sealing, using of materials from the bottom). Improvement of reservoir embankment. Ground shaping (landscaping). Pollution protection.
6. Reservoir facilities – water inlet and water outlet (in terms of reservoir stratigraphy) . Outlet facilities (types, functions, machines). Overflows (types, capacity, calculation of crests, combined and multiple facilities – safety overflows).
7. Specific features of construction, erection and operation - fish breeding reservoirs (ponds), erosion protection reservoirs and melioration lakes.
8. Specific features of construction, erection and operation - compensatory reservoirs (equalizing and supply reservoirs, feeding reservoirs, liquid manure tanks, storage tanks), homogenising and water management reservoirs (incl. those that can be used for fish breeding and underground tanks).
9. Specific features of construction, erection and operation - rain water head ponds, rain water cisterns, fire water tanks (for fire safety. Biological tanks - purification processes. Calculations and designs. Layout, facilities and operation.
10. Specific features of construction, erection and operation – protective and catch basin and reservoirs (flood release basins and polders).
11. Lakes for recreation – required quality and facilities, open air pools incl. swimming baths and bathing pools, reservoirs that might be used for recreation, river sections for recreation (facilities and equipment). Decoration lakes and reservoirs in housing developments (such as fountains)
12. Sludge beds and sedimentation tanks - types (depending on stored materials, permanent and periodic tanks). Sluicing - process and methods. Removal of water. Specific features of facilities. Sedimentation sumps and sludge dewatering tanks.
13. Specific features of construction, erection and operation - construction of embankments (increasing embankment height, hydraulic fill dams). Excavation of sludge. Reclamation of sludge.
14. Sediments in reservoirs – reasons for sediments. Composition and failures. Desludging – removal of sediments (survey, analyses, excavation, transport). Costs and environment aspects. Reconstruction of tanks.
15. Designing of tanks. Operation and handling rules. Master plan of water reservoirs and lakes in the Czech Republic.
