Profile of the Programme |
---|
The aim of the degree programme is to profile graduates for the needs of professional practice and qualified work in state and public administration, in evaluation, planning and decision-making in the field of environmental protection and creation, in production and industrial enterprises involved in the extraction and processing of mineral resources and, last but not least, for the needs of research and development. The graduate should be able to handle and technically and organisationally ensure and manage processes and technologies related to environmental protection issues in connection with the extraction and treatment of mineral resources. It is, therefore, a follow-up Master’s degree preparing an engineer who has acquired not only cognitive competences, but also affective competences, who is able to solve problems related to the protection and creation of the environment in the industrial and post-mining environment, including the solution of problems associated with the cessation of mining and industrial activities, not only in the protection or prevention of individual environmental components (air, water, soil) in relation to the restoration of the landscape, but also comprehensively, in the protection of the entire biosphere. |

Graduates of the Master’s degree programme Environmental Protection in Industry will acquire theoretical knowledge from the study of professional subjects that thematically cover the broad area of protection of the industrial environment and the environment after mining and mineral processing. Compulsory and elective courses include expertise in global issues of environmental industrialization, the consequences of mining decline with reference to geohazards and environmental accidents, brings expertise in industrial toxicology and ecotoxicology, engineering ecology, geobotany and environmental microbiology, engineering geology, are focused on the treatment and extraction of minerals, including methods of their biological processing, industrial wastewater treatment, familiarize the students with modern technologies for water, soil and air protection, remediation technologies, and, in order to evaluate the state of the environment, they introduce modern methods of studying ecosystems, information systems in landscape care, multi-criteria analysis and other procedures applied in the regeneration of industrial landscapes, in reducing the risks of nanomaterials for the environment and in protecting biodiversity in industrial environments. The study includes compulsory courses of technical theoretical background, which allow students to expand their knowledge in the field of environmental geochemistry and are based on selected chapters of mathematics and physics. The technical knowledge is supported by specific practical skills and experience from laboratory exercises, practical and field exercises, in particular, from professional practice and from research and development collaborations in which students in the follow-up Master’s programme can participate as part of teams solving specific scientific tasks (SGS projects). Students choose the compulsory elective courses in their personal study plan according to their field of study, professional interest, the topic of their qualification thesis and future professional direction. These courses are then suitably complemented by compulsory elective courses with a link to social sciences, which develop students’ communication and economic competences. |

Graduates are able to synthetically use the professional knowledge acquired by studying the subjects of the Master’s programme to carry out their future professional activities in a methodologically correct and professional manner. Graduates are able to independently analyse environmental problems related to environmental protection and are able to design appropriate research methods and procedures in the field of environmental impact assessment of mining and industrial technologies. They apply a creative approach in solving environmental problems, i.e. they are able to actively use the acquired knowledge to design appropriate methods of solution, coordinate the activities of a team in finding common approaches to solving problems and thus contribute to the expansion of knowledge in the given scientific field. On an intellectual level, this involves the development of competences in the area of affectivity and social interaction (e.g. teamwork skills, defending one’s opinion in a discussion and providing professional justification for certain decisions). In terms of professional skills, the emphasis is on the development of independent creative thinking, especially in interpreting the results obtained in the context of the current state of knowledge in the field. Professional skills are also supported by communication competences, which consist in the ability to master professional terminology (in Czech and foreign languages) and the ability to present and defend the achieved results in professional discussions and at the international level. |

Graduates are qualified to be independent professionals who can make responsible decisions and understand professional issues related to the protection and creation of the environment. The diversity of the graduates’ opportunities to find employment is high, given the relatively broad scientific basis of the study (education in engineering and natural sciences, environmental technology, professional legislation, statistical data evaluation and other general competences). Graduates are able to assemble a team of experts and coordinate their work to successfully solve environmental problems and to apply corrective measures, and are prepared to take ultimate responsibility for the results achieved. They are able to present the results obtained in the context of the current state of knowledge, to defend their solution procedures in a comprehensible manner in discussions and to present their own findings in the field to other members of the scientific community; they are able to communicate professionally in at least one foreign language. Continued professional growth, acquisition and application of new knowledge in the field is a matter of course. |

Graduates of the Master’s degree programme Environmental Protection in Industry will find employment in business management in positions related to environmental protection, especially in the post-mining and mineral processing sector, but also in state and municipal administration and academia. Typical job roles include: Professional worker - independent environmental prevention officer in the field of environmental protection in state and municipal institutions, technical specialist for the environment, worker - environmental protection manager in industrial firms and enterprises, specialist technician in the field of environmental protection in industry, corporate ecologist, ecologist specialist in mining and mineral processing, environmental protection specialist technician, waste disposal risk assessor, specialist technician in remediation and reclamation, specialist technician for air protection, specialist technician for water protection, but also independent researcher in research institutes and institutions, member of a research group, lecturer at a university.
Graduates are prepared to continue their studies in doctoral programmes, especially in the doctoral programme Environmental Protection in Industry at the Department of Environmental Engineering. |
