Celebrations on 17 November in Ostrava

Join us in creating a tradition that will worthily commemorate the events of 17 November 1939 and 1989.

Let's join Ostrava with many other cities in the country whose residents are remembering and meeting over events and values so important to our nation - freedom, democracy and also memory.

Program of the day:

15:00-16:00 - discussion at the VSB - Technical univesity Ostrava in Ostrava-Poruba, building C 

16:10 - transfer from the discussion to the centre (doubledecker from Ostrava public transport)

17:00 - start of the programme at the memorial plaque on Masaryk Square, start of the parade (Masaryk Square, M. Sýkory Bridge, Regional Court, Bráfova street, Masaryk Square)

18:00 - start of the symbolic cleaning of the memorial plaque on the building of the University of Ostrava (corner of Bráfova and Českobratrská streets)

18:00-18:30 - moving and opening of the accompanying programme on Masaryk Square (speeches by representatives of the OU, VSB-TUO and the Statutory City of Ostrava; Czechoslovak version of the anthem)

19:00-19:30 - concert by Martin Chodúr and his band MACH

19:40-20:00 - guided projection of archival images on the adjacent building

20:00-20:30 - performance by students from the Faculty of Arts of the OU

20:30 - end of the event

The Journey to Light event is organized by the Student Chamber of the Academic Senate of the OU in cooperation with VSB-TUO and the Statutory City of Ostrava. The aim is to create a traditional event adequately commemorating the events of 17 November, to activate the general public, educate them and provide a meeting place on this historically crucial day. Let's celebrate the Day of Struggle for Freedom and Democracy and the International Student Day in Ostrava together.
