VSB-TUO to develop remote vehicle control technologies with Korean institute

Researchers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava will join an international research and development project focused on the remote operation of multiple vehicles and improving their safety. They will work with the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), a leading Korean research institution. The joint research is funded through a South Korean government programme.

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava is strengthening its international activities in the development of technologies for the automotive industry. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has signed a cooperation agreement with the Korea Automotive Technology Institute on the research and development of technologies for remote vehicle operation, enhanced safety and vehicle platooning.

The cooperation is part of the Development of Detachable On-Board Device for Multi-Vehicle Remote Operation and Safety Enhancement Technologies (DOVE) project, supported by the South Korean government’s Industrial Technology Innovation Program through the Korea Planning & Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT).

Experts from VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and their colleagues from KATECH, a leading Korean research institute focused on automotive technologies, will work together on the research project. “International cooperation in applied research is important for VSB – Technical University of Ostrava not only because it enables us to share expertise, but also because it gives us the opportunity to contribute to the development of technologies with real-world applications. The automotive industry is undergoing major transformation, and digitalisation, automation and transport safety are among the areas where our university has a lot to offer,” says Igor Ivan, Rector of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava.

The DOVE project focuses on the development of technologies that will enable the remote operation of multiple vehicles while enhancing the safety of this type of control. The project also includes the development of a special device that can be installed in vehicles and provide the technological functions required for remote operation. Bringing together research capacities from Czechia and South Korea will make it possible to combine the expertise and experience of both institutions and jointly develop solutions that could be used in future transport systems.

"Joining the project with the Korea Automotive Technology Institute gives our faculty and opportunity to work with an important international partner on a technologically demanding topic. The development of remote vehicle control systems requires the integration of a wide rangeof fields from electronics and communications to control systems, data processing and safety. The interdisciplinary approach is one of our key strengths,” says Petr Šimoník, project coordinator and Vice-Dean for Industry Cooperation at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VSB-TUO.

“Through the DOVE project, which will commence this year, we plan to develop technologies for establishing a reliable remote assistance system based on communication connectivity among vehicles, networks, and infrastructure, incorporating collision safety support systems. Through this effort, we aim to contribute to enhancing the safety and reliability of automated driving technologies. The results of the joint research could contribute not only to the development of new applications for remotely operated vehicles but also to enhancing road safety in the near future. In addition to technological development itself, an important aspect of this cooperation will be the sharing of research data, know-how, and expertise between Czech and Korean researchers” says Chong-wook Chin., president of KATECH.

The university´s main project partners are Intens Corporation and O2. Associated partners include Škoda Auto and Tatra Trucks. The Korean partners include are Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), BYDA, SAESOL Tech, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), AUTOBIZ and DH Autoware. In addition, Korean associated partners include Renault Korea and LG Electronics.
