Modern laboratories for future engineers VSB - Technical University of Ostrava will open a new building

Access to state-of-the-art devices where they can experience theory in practice. VSB-TUO will offer this to its students in the extension of the CPIT TL1 building, which is expected to open on Monday, 25 November at 11.30 am.

The new building will serve students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) and the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology (FMST) in teaching practical subjects. Students in fields of study focused on transport, chemical and environmental engineering technology will thus gain access to state-of-the-art technology.

“Future engineers can look forward to the testing and development centre of cars and motorcycles, as well as a laboratory equipped with technologies for conventional and unconventional machining, additive manufacturing and coordinate measurement”, explains the Dean prof. Hlavatý while introducing the new faculty facilities. During the lessons, the FMST students will look into the process engineering laboratory.

The new Vehicle Testing and Development Centre is intended especially for students of the Transport Systems and Technology programme, who can learn about designing and testing cars and motorcycles in practice. For example, a test room with active cylinders will be available for testing hybrid and electric vehicles. In an engine test room equipped with an asynchronous dynamometer, students can then test internal combustion engines with automation, control and simulation systems. 

High-tech equipment is also waiting for students in engineering technology. They will be able to get familiarized with water jet cutting technology, surface texture measurement, and 3D printing of powder metals and polymers. The laboratory is equipped with an optical microscope with a newly purchased rotary clamping unit that allows 3D measurement of microgeometry of cutting tools and measurement of surface texture. An optical head for measuring the 3D shape and its digitization was added to the coordinate measuring device; it can be used in reverse engineering reconstruction of CAD models. The TruPrint 1000 machine enabling 3D printing of powder metals using Laser Metal Fusion technology as well as the three-axis machining centre MCV 1270 for progressive machining methods will serve for teaching the subject Additive Technology.

Students of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the FMST will also have a new laboratory at their disposal. In addition to the process engineering laboratory, new laboratory stations are also prepared for them, demonstrating the basic principles of heat, mass and momentum transfer.
