Description
Due to long-term operation of nuclear power plants, or their reactors, the apertures become obstructed with magnetite, which leads to a lower internal diameter. This causes differences in temperature around the fuel rods in the order of several degrees Celsius. As a result, the differences limit the use of the fuel rods and cause complications to reactor operators, who are forced to look for solutions. Moreover, the temperature differences may be caused by other factors too (e.g. fuel, thermocouples) and thus operators call for effective methods to measure the internal diameter in apertures.
Researchers from VSB-TUO have developed a method and a device that enable observations and verification of nuclear reactor apertures even under the complicated conditions characteristic of nuclear reactor systems. The device shall make the nuclear reactor operation more efficient and eliminate possible negative impacts due to clogging.
