This course provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of mining operations in both surface and underground extraction of coal, ores, non-metallic minerals and construction minerals in the Czech Republic and worldwide. Emphasis is placed on the interconnection of the entire mining process – from the initial development of the mine, through the mining itself (breaking up, transport, support) to the processes directly related to remedying the consequences of mining activities (remediation and reclamation) and the formation of the post-mining landscape. The course provides the necessary context and disciplinary foundation not only for future mining engineers, but also for mine surveyors (geodesists) and specialists in landscape creation and conservation.
Specialist knowledge: Students will acquire knowledge of the basic principles, technologies and processes involved in both surface and underground mining of mineral deposits. They will gain theoretical knowledge of the individual phases of mining operations (breaking, loading, transport, backfilling of mined-out areas) and understand the reasons for choosing specific mining methods. Furthermore, they will gain an understanding of the impacts of mining on the surface and the principles of remediating the consequences of mining activities, which form the cornerstone for understanding the development of the post-mining landscape.
Professional skills: The student is able to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired when assessing mining and technical processes and to analyse the suitability of specific technologies for various geological and deposit conditions. They are able to recognise and define the relationships between mining and spatial changes in the landscape (useful for surveying documentation) and to formulate basic procedures for minimising the negative impacts of mining, including proposals for the remediation and reintegration of post-mining sites back into the landscape.
Professional competence: The student is competent to tackle basic and moderately complex tasks related to the preparation, planning and implementation of mining operations and subsequent land restoration, both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team (e.g. in collaboration with a surveyor, mining engineer and environmentalist). They are able to navigate mining issues across related disciplines, select appropriate technological and environmental procedures, communicate competently with practitioners, and apply this knowledge to ensure safe mining operations and the sustainable development of the post-mining landscape.
