As part of the long-term cooperation between the Faculty of Mining and Geology at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, three international students recently completed a study stay at FMG. Their visit was characterized by intensive participation in academic activities, the development of professional knowledge, and active exploration of the region’s industrial environment.

During their stay, the students were fully integrated into the faculty’s academic life and attended classes alongside Czech students. This enabled them not only to deepen their expertise but also to gain valuable insight into a different educational system and academic culture.

An integral part of their stay also included professional excursions to industrial partners and key industrial sites that are unique within both the field and the region. The students highlighted as particularly valuable their visit to CEMEX, where they explored current innovative approaches to the use of secondary raw materials in the production of low-carbon cement. This experience directly builds on the existing research collaboration between Murdoch University, CEMEX, and FMG VSB-TUO, and represents a strong example of effective links between academia and industry.

The students also actively participated in the international COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) program, which they completed beyond the scope of their standard study requirements. This allowed them to collaborate in international teams within the U!REKA alliance and to further develop their skills in teamwork, communication, and solving professional challenges in a global context.

The study stay at FMG VSB-TUO thus represented a significant educational experience for the students from Murdoch University, extending well beyond traditional classroom learning. The combination of academic education, practical industry engagement, and international collaboration enabled them to gain invaluable knowledge and skills that will be important for their future professional and academic careers.

VSB – Technical University of Ostrava continues to develop its international partnerships with the aim of offering students unique opportunities for study, research, and engagement with industry.
