Description
Protective hypothermia is a progressive approach applied, for example, in the resuscitation of patients with hypoxicischemic encephalopathy, the application of which substantially increases the patient's chance for survival. The design uses Peltier modules in the construction of the cooling device to ensure the heat transfer. The warm side of the module is cooled by a cooling device. The connection between the cooling element and the human tissue is
ensured using a contact element, e.g. a gel layer. Replaceable cooling elements are fixed in a carrier construction, while the heat-exchange surface is able to shape according to the cooled tissue. The contact element may be fitted with a sensor to monitor the temperature and pressure between the contact elements and the cooled human tissue. The contact temperature between the contact elements and the cooled human tissue may be controlled and programmed, i.e. it may remain constant during the therapy, it may vary within pre-set limits, or it may have a cyclic character.
