Summary
Subject deals with LAN and WAN computer networks domains.Students are introduced to basic services granted by computer networks,to basic network topologies and carrier access methods,to particular components of network hardware and standard types of present network technologies. In practice students are introduced to Novell NetWare network environment and to basic services granted by network.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
Student will be able to formulate the basic characteristics of computer networks.
Student will be able to demonstrate the basic services provided by computer networks, basic network topologies, access carrier methods and the basic elements of network hardware.
Student will be able to analyze standard types of present network cable and wireless technologies.
Course Contents
1. Characteristics of computer networks, the types of stations in the network, basic network components, compared with the terminal network.
Basic networking software, Novell NetWare file server and workstations.
2. The reasons for introducing computer networks: data sharing, resource sharing, increased system reliability.
Network environment in terms of users, user types, user groups.
3. Basic types of computer networks.
Object structure of the network organization of objects, types and names of objects.
4. Local area networks: basic properties of networks of client-to-server and peer-to-peer network.
File system file server, network directory structure. Mapping drives, mapping drives to search.
5. Services provided by the LAN.
Means to protect data against unauthorized users - at the network registration (Login Security).
6. LAN topologies: bus, star, circular.
Means to protect data against unauthorized users - at the level of access rights (Security Rights).
7. Methods of access to portable media: CSMA / CD, Token Ring, Token Bus.
Means to protect data against unauthorized users - at the level of attributes (Attribute Security).
8. LAN hardware: network cards, and installation parameters.
Print server, network printing.
9. LAN Hardware - connecting cable and connectors, coaxial cable, twisted pair, fiber optic cable, wireless connection.
Login script, type the login script.
10. Hardware LAN - Active components: amplifiers, splitters, converters, bridges, routers, gateways.
Commands and internal variable login script.
11. Standards of network hardware - ARCNET, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet.
OSI reference model, protocols.
12. Standards of network hardware - Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Model of TCP IP.
13. Standards Network Hardware - IBM Token Ring, FDDI.
Addressing in IP networks, IP v4.
14. Securing data against accidental errors.
Addressing in IP networks, IPv6.
