Simulator of railway track conditions can help enhance railway safety

Virtualisation of railway conditions and implementation of test rides in a laboratory environment. Breakthrough Technology by Czech Scientists Utilizes Biodiesel Production Waste and Improves Fuel Properties

Scientists from the Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute (CATRIN) at Palacký University Olomouc, together with researchers from the CEET and IT4Innovations research centers at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, have developed a unique technology that enables the transformation of glycerol — a waste product from biodiesel production — into a valuable compound, thereby increasing the efficiency of current biofuels.

Data room of IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center boasts not only supercomputers but also high-capacity data storage facilities. The first one is the PROJECT storage, which significantly facilitates the work of researchers who calculate their projects on the Ostrava supercomputers. In the second case, it is the data storage facility of the CESNET association, which is one of the largest in the Czech Republic.

The 58th edition of the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers was announced today in St. Louis, USA. Czech scientists become first to observe an inhomogeneous electron charge distribution on an atom

Until now, observing subatomic structures was beyond the resolution capabilities of direct imaging methods, and this seemed unlikely to change. Czech scientists, however, have presented a method with which they became the first in the world to observe an inhomogeneous electron charge distribution around a halogen atom, thus confirming the existence of a phenomenon that had been theoretically predicted but never directly observed.

VSB-TUO features in the prestigious Shanghai ranking for the first time

VSB - Technical University of Ostrava has been ranked in the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, for the first time. In this year’s edition of the ranking, which focuses primarily on the scientific and research performance of universities, VSB-TUO ranks 901 - 1000. There are seven Czech universities included in ARWU 2021.

Universities build a National Quantum Infrastructure for the Czech Republic with connections abroad for extremely secure communication

The first inter-city quantum key distribution in the Czech Republic - the most secure encrypted communication

The e-INFRA CZ consortium has implemented quantum key distribution, which has reached primacy in many ways. Communication secured by encryption through quantum key distribution (QKD) represents a new shift in the field of communication security and addresses the risks associated with the advent of quantum computers, which brings with it the real danger of existing encryption methods being cracked more easily.

The supercomputing centre aided in establishing the vaccination centre in Ostrava

In March, a large-scale vaccination centre in Ostrava's Černá louka area became operational. Vaccination according to a simulation prepared by scientists at IT4Innovations can be administered to up to 2,600 people per day. Today's capacity is around 1,000 people, depending on the number of vaccines being delivered.

Anselm supercomputer from Ostrava is departing for Silicon Heaven

It has been more than seven years since the very first supercomputer was launched at IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center in Ostrava. The Anselm supercomputer, from the company Atos, was launched in 2013 and has since then had its computational resources available for Czech and foreign scientists.

DIH Ostrava among the winners of the call for European Digital Innovation Hubs

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has announced the winner of the national call for European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH), which, together with European partners, will support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public administration institutions in the wider integration of digital technologies into manufacturing, commerce, and public services. The new most powerful Czech supercomputer is going to be called Karolina

In the final quarter of last year there was a competition to name the most powerful supercomputer in the Czech Republic, which will be installed at IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center in Ostrava this year. From more than 5,000 submissions sent by over 2,000 people, the name KAROLINA was selected by the jury.

IT4Innovations becomes the National Competence Centre in HPC

– IT4Innovations has joined the EuroCC project, the objective of which is to establish the National Competence Centre in high-performance computing (HPC) and implement supporting activities in this field focused on industry, public administration, and academia. T-Mobile launched the first campus network in Ostrava

T-Mobile and VSB – Technical University of Ostrava have completed the construction of the first private 5G ready campus network in the Czech Republic. T-Mobile launched the campus network on 8 July 2020 and handed over its functional infrastructure, which is currently operated on 4G frequencies, to VSB-TUO for operation. This will be followed by the development of applications that will use the new technologies supplied in the industry, as well as the commissioning of 5G.

Prof. Ing. Vaclav Roubicek, CSc., dr.h.c. died on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, after a long serious illness. His name was closely connected with the VSB-Technical University of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian region.
