Summary
The course is focused on risk management in the workplace. The ability to assess occupational risks and to propose effective measures to treat them is one of the key competencies of OSH professionals. Students will get acquainted with common workplace hazards (risks), with procedures, methods/techniques and tools for their assessment and with fundamental principles regarding prevention of occupational accidents and diseases. The course is linked to ISO 45001:2018, ISO 31000:2018 and IEC310010:2019 standards. A teamwork-based practical project present core part of the course. Students will have the opportunity to work on case studies from real companies and to carry out assessment of occupational risks in practice.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit
- Explain the importance and role of risk assessment and risk management in the OSH field.
- Interpret the requirements of regulations, standards and good practice in the field of occupational risk management.
- Apply the general risk management process (e.g. according to ISO 31000) in the OSH field.
- Applies selected procedures, methods/techniques and tools for occupational risk assessment.
- Assess the OSH risks and propose adequate controls.

1. Introduction (OSH risk management and its importance. Relation to other risk assessments in the field of HSE/Safety and Security. Legal framework of OSH risk management.).
2. Basic concepts and vocabulary
3. The general process of risk management and its application in the area of OSH.
4. Workplace hazards – part I (safety, physical).
5. Workplace hazards – part II (chemical, biological).
6. Workplace hazards – part III (ergonomic, psychosocial).
7. Preparation for risk assessment in OSH.
8. Identification of occupational risks.
9. Analysis and evaluation of occupational risks.
10. Treatment of occupational risks (General prevention principles. Hierarchy of controls. Residual risks and risk transfer. Cost-benefit analysis. Risk treatment plan.) – part I.
11. Treatment of occupational risks (General prevention principles. Hierarchy of controls. Residual risks and risk transfer. Cost-benefit analysis. Risk treatment plan.) – part II.
12. New and emerging risks.
