Assessment of foreign secondary and higher education within the admission procedure at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava
For applicants to study in Bachelor’s degree programmes
As part of the admission procedure, the university will assess the fulfilment of the condition of achieving secondary education with a school-leaving examination pursuant to Section 48 (4) of the Higher Education Act, for applicants who obtained foreign secondary education by completing a secondary school curriculum at a foreign secondary school, an international secondary school, a European school operating under the Convention defining the Statute of the European Schools, or a school in which the Ministry has authorized compulsory schooling in accordance with the Education Act.
Send the following documents in paper form by post (or as a document in PDF format created by an authorized conversion) to the address of the faculty where you are applying to study. The final date for the delivery of the documents can be found on the website of the relevant faculty. Previous foreign education can be evidenced in one of the following ways:
a) proof of general recognition of equivalence or validity (so-called “nostrifikace” in Czech)
- The applicant proves:
- An officially certified copy of the document on general recognition of the equivalence or validity of a foreign document on the attainment of secondary education in the Czech Republic, obtained pursuant to Act No. 561/2004 Coll., on pre-school, primary, secondary, vocational and other education (Education Act), in wording of later regulations or according to earlier legal regulations
- It is issued by regional authorities, the City of Prague Municipal Authority or the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports

- Free of charge (a fee of CZK 1,000 is paid to the regional authority or the municipal authority as part of the procedure for recognizing the equivalence or validity of foreign secondary education)
b) proof of European Baccalaureate
- The applicant proves:
- Applies to European Baccalaureate only
- Free of charge
- Does not apply to the International Baccalaureate, which is considered a document under Section 48 Subsection 4 (d) of the Act on Higher Education Institutions and for which it is proceeded in accordance with (d). If the International Baccalaureate is an integral part of the secondary school-leaving examination certificate for students who have successfully passed the secondary school-leaving examination in Czech language and literature in the common part of the secondary school-leaving examination, these candidates provide an officially certified copy of the secondary school-leaving certificate
- A secondary school-leaving certificate issued by schools, which have been approved by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports with a different way of completing education by a secondary school-leaving examination in the field of education 79-41-K/610 Grammar school - selected subjects in a foreign language (Section 81 Subsection 9 of the Education Act for the period from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2020). The IB Diploma is an integral part of the school-leaving examination certificate for pupils who have successfully passed the school-leaving examination in Czech language and literature in the common part of the secondary school-leaving examination. These are the following schools: The English College in Prague, Anglické gymnázium, o.p.s., PORG - gymnázium a základní škola, o. p. s., OPEN GATE - gymnázium a ZŠ, s. r. o., 1st International School of Ostrava - mezinárodní gymnázium, s. r. o. Those who have completed their education at these secondary schools provide an officially certified copy of the secondary school-leaving certificate within the admission procedure.
c) automatically equivalent document
- Foreign document on foreign secondary education with a school-leaving examination, if it is automatically equivalent without further official procedure in the Czech Republic, according to its international obligations - these are documents proving obtaining the equivalent of a Czech school-leaving certificate in Slovakia, Poland (swiadectwo dojrzalosci), Hungary (érettségi bizonyítvány) and Slovenia
- The applicant proves:
- An officially certified copy (see forms of verification) of a foreign certificate or similar document on foreign secondary education, which was obtained by completing studies in a secondary education programme at a foreign secondary school operating in accordance with the legislation of a foreign country
- If necessary, the faculty will invite the applicant to provide the following documents as well:
- Original or officially certified copy (see forms of verification) of the document on the content and scope of education completed at a foreign school (overview of subjects with the number of hours taught for individual years of study).

d) foreign proof of foreign secondary education
- The applicant proves:
- Officially certified copy (see forms of verification) of a foreign certificate or similar document on foreign secondary education, which was obtained by completing studies in a secondary education programme at a foreign secondary school operating in accordance with the legislation of a foreign country,
- Original or officially certified copy (see forms of verification) of the document on the content and scope of education completed at a foreign school (overview of subjects with the number of hours taught for individual years of study).
- If necessary, the faculty will invite the applicant to provide the following documents as well:
- Additional information on the content and scope of foreign secondary school studies,
- Additional information that the study programme was carried out by an institution authorized to provide education comparable to secondary education under the Education Act,
- Confirmation of the relevant foreign secondary school or other relevant foreign body (e.g. the Ministry of Education) that a person who has completed his/her secondary school curriculum of a given foreign secondary school is entitled to apply in that foreign country for admission to study in a Bachelor’s degree programme or Master’s degree programme that does not follow in a Bachelor’s degree programme.
- Applies to students to whom the procedure according to (c) cannot be applied
- In the case of a positive assessment, the document is accepted; in the case of a negative assessment, proof of the document according to (a) (general “recognition“) is required
- The assessment is valid only for the admission procedure at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava
- The assessment fee is CZK 600, regardless of whether the assessment result is positive or negative. The applicant is obliged to pay the fee within 10 days of the call for payment. If the fee is not paid, the university will not further assess the education and the applicant will be required to provide proof of the document according to (a) (general recognition of equivalence or validity (so-called “nostrifikace” in Czech)
Translations
Documents that are not originally published in Czech, English or Slovak must be officially translated into Czech or English. Translated sheets must be linked to a copy of the document in such a way as to prevent additional exchange or swap of sheets.
Other documents
If the applicant’s situation so requires, he/she shall also provide the following documents:
- Power of attorney, if the applicant is represented by a proxy holder to prove the fulfilment of the admission condition according to Section 48 Subsections 4 and 5 of the Higher Education Act,
- In the event of a change in the name of the applicant, an officially certified copy of the document proving this (e.g. marriage certificate),
- An officially certified copy of the decision on granting international protection if the assessment is requested by a person referred to in Section 90 Subsection 4 of the Higher Education Act and if this person wishes to use the option of replacing any of the documents with a solemn declaration.
